Ask Eric:

In this section of the web site, I will answer questions as well as give my input on many different aspects of the golf course industry.

For those of you who do not know me, I have worked for Steven Willand Inc. for the past 3 years, starting on the Service side and now I'm working with the Sales Department. In the past I have worked on 3 different golf courses for the 12 years prior to taking the job with SWI.

In this blog, I am going to give you an open-minded opinion on many different aspects of the golf course industry as well as updates on new products and upcoming events. I have been there. I have been in your shoes. I have used and operated many of the pieces that we sell as well as the products that we compete against.. Please email me with any questions that you might have or even ideas on subjects that you would like me to discuss.

Please email Eric with all your ideas.

    • First Video

      1530 EC-

How can you make the #1 Spinner Topdresser in golf better? Check out Turfco's new and improved Top Dresser with an electric controller. This thing is great! You can now save and store your settings so you don't have to tweak adjustments on the go. With this you have 3 different settings from the factory which are setup to spread light-narrow, light-wide and heavy-narrow. If you find another setting that you prefer you can store it in place of the factory settings.

    • Second Video

      Turfco Tri-Wave-

This is by far THE BEST OVERSEEDER I'VE SEEN. Not only does it leave minimal disruption but it has 3 floating heads that follow the different contours of your course. How many times have you used a seeder that would dig in on the left side and barely scratch the surface on the right? With this, that is eliminated. It also leaves a square slit which is wider at the bottom and allows more seed-to-soil contact that provides a MUCH BETTER GERMINATION RATE.

  • Smithco 3180 Sprayer

3180It's sad to admit, but this sprayer actually excites me. It has many attributes that proves Smithco knows sprayers. I have spent too many hours on the Toro Multipro 5500 to know the positives and negatives.

The Smithco 3180 Sprayer has come up with an answer for everything I didn't like about the Toro. First off, the pump. Smithco's centrifugal pump allows up to 70 gallons per minute. (30 gpm for Toro). As anyone who has sprayed fairways knows, it not only it takes forever to fill and mix but it takes hours to spray all 18 holes. With that being said, there have been many times that the chemicals sit in the tank for over 2 hours. The biggest fault of the Toro was the agitation system. Not only did the throttle need to be way up (noisy and wastes fuel) but the second that you turn the booms on it affects the pressure is that is used to agitate and mix the chemicals. We sometimes used a mixture of up to 11 different products so agitation should have been the key component we were looking for.

Safe-FilThe Smithco Safe-Fill System is UNBELIEVABLE!! What is it you ask. The Smithco Safe Fill System is a self-contained eduction system that allows the operator to mix liquid and dry chemicals safely and quickly.

In layman's terms: NO MORE MIXING POWDERS (at all) AND HAVING TO REACH UP AND POUR INTO THE TANK.

    In Smithco's words:

    • 316 Stainless steel venturi provides highest eduction rate and durability against all chemicals

    • Safety - All crop protection chemistry is mixed at ground level. Cleanload eliminates the need for operators to climb on and around machines while handling expensive and dangerous chemicals. Operator exposure to slips, trips, and falls is reduced. Chemical spill potential is reduced, minimizing operator and environmental exposure.

    • Optional suction lance allows the operator to educt bulk liquid and dry chemicals (wettable powders, dry flowables and water-dispersible granules) from large containers without secondary handling.

    • Robust tank and bottle rinse nozzles designed to wash Cleanload hopper and triple rinse chemical containers of residue
